MFA Thesis Choreographies

Two new choreographies by Master of Fine Arts candidates Jarrell Iu-Hui Chua and Christine Germain.

Ligilo by Jarrell Iu-Hui Chua in collaboration with Bobby August Jr., travels through the worlds of memories, dreams and present realities to  explore the realm of touch and its effects on relationships throughout time. (Ligilo means "link" in Esperanto.)

Transmutation by Christine Germain in collaboration with Andrea del Moral and Deirdre Morris, asks how, as individuals, do we deal with our identity shifts? It investigates the learning or relearning of who we are, and our relationships with others, with space, and with the world, as we embrace, reject or simply accept this new alien identity. How can we root ourselves and find ground while still en route towards a new identity?

Three women explore how their relationship with their environment influences understanding, feel and use of body; how personal history creates identity; and adaptation to a new identity that has been transformed following trauma, change of place, culture, or language.

This production is rated R for nudity and adult language.

MFA Thesis Choreographies opens at Mondavi Center’s Vanderhoef Studio Theatre on Thursday, Feb. 21 and runs through March 3.
