Inside the Dragon – Intercultural Collaborations in China

This event is a panel discussion focusing on some of the current challenges presented to foreign producers engaging in intercultural collaborations with Asian artists. In a session facilitated by
Professor Xiaomei Chen
(East Asian Languages and Cultures), playwright and filmmaker
Philip Gotanda
will discuss his experiences, alongside a selection of the work of Shanghai-based creative producers,
Barry Plews & Hu He (Reckless Moments
) and their independent
Creative Futures
initiative will provide material for a discussion on the purpose and practice of such intercultural, collaborative initiatives in China.
Other participants include graduate student
Fei Shi
, working on intercultural issues in China, the United States, and elsewhere. Some examples will be drawn from a range of recent Reckless Moments projects including dance & music (
Chinese Whispers, Speaking Chinese);
animation & film (
Sweet & Sour
with the Shanghai Animation Film Studio
); circus (
Lost in Music
with Shanghai Circus
); and intermedia performance (
White Snake)
together with forthcoming Chinese opera productions by the
Shanghai Kun Opera a

Shanghai Peking Opera
troupes.
